9 Essential Carry-On Items

It can be difficult to be mindful of your health when you travel. Most of us pack only the bare necessities: clothing, hygiene items, our electronic devices, and some paperwork if necessary. There are some essential healthy items that you should always bring with you in your carry-on no matter what your destination is. This article will introduce these items and how best to store them.

 

1. Healthy Snacks

More and more, airlines are shying away from offering food for your trip. The usual snack typically consists of a small bag of pretzels or peanuts. You can do better than that. How about packing some healthy snacks to eat on the plane or on layovers? Airport food is so expensive! With a little pre-planning, you can have a delicious snack ready to eat right in your carry on. Some ideas include organic mixed nuts, fresh fruit, and veggie sticks with hummus.

2. First Aid Kit

You never know when an accident is going to happen, that’s why they’re called accidents. Having a small first aid kit in your carry on will help take care of any mishaps that may occur while traveling. Perhaps you cut yourself on a piece of metal sticking out in your seat, (which should never happen, but it does), or you trip while running from one terminal to the next. Do you want to have blood all over your clothes, or risk infection from an open wound? Stash a small bag of band-aids, antiseptic wipes, antibiotic ointment, etc. on your person every time you fly.

3. Sunscreen

The sun is everywhere! Even on a cloudy day and even through glass windows. There is always a chance of getting a sunburn whenever you spend more than an hour in the sun’s rays. Taking along a small bottle of sunscreen with you on your carry-on bag will help to protect you from this. Most sunscreens only last several hours so don’t forget to reapply throughout the day.

 

4. Water Bottle

Bring it into the airport empty so that security doesn’t confiscate it, but fill it up once you are inside the airport. Airplanes dry you out and you never know how long the attendants will take before they come by with their carts. It’s always best to have your own to ensure you don’t get dehydrated.

5. Vitamins(Emergen-C)

When traveling, our bodies are adjusting to new surroundings. Also, with so many people in a confined space, you never know what kind of germs your body is being subjected to. Making sure to take your vitamins with you in your carry-on will help you remember to take supplements that help boost your immune system. Even if you don’t take them on the plane, you might need them when you arrive at your destination.

 

6. Current Medications

Again, you don’t want these out of your sight. For one, suitcases are lost through the airport on a consistent basis. If you have a medication you need to take daily but your baggage is shipped to you in three days, what good does that do you? Take your medications with you. Trust me on this.

 

7. Chapstick

We’ve already talked about how airplanes seem to suck the hydration right out of you. After dry throat, the second driest part of the body always seems to be the lips. Dry, cracked lips are not fun and can even bleed if you don’t take care of them. Bring along your favorite chapstick in your carry on and apply generously before you get on each plane.

 

8. Comfortable Shoes

This is another item that is best to have for a “what if” scenario. What if your bags get lost and all you have are your comfortable shoes in there, but you need to walk around town when you arrive at your destination? What if your feet start to hurt half way through your trip because you bought new shoes and they are rubbing against your heel? If you have comfortable shoes in your carry on, you don’t have to worry.

 

9. Ear Plugs

Sometimes you end up next to a noisy person, or you just need to tune out for a quick nap. Ear plugs are helpful in this regard. If you are taking the early or late flight and need to sleep, ear plugs are your best friend. Lack of sleep can bring along a slew of health issues.

 

It is important to remember to make sure everything you pack meets the FAA guidelines for airplane travel. If you are unsure, don’t pack it. Some of the items they confiscate seem silly, but it’s all in the name of safety.
